Professional Experience

2003- Yellowstone Outfitter Owner and operator of Yellowstone Wilderness Outfitters, offering guided horseback tours of Yellowstone National Park, including day rides, pack trips and fly fishing trips.

2002-2003 Assistant Professor (visiting), Sam Houston State University. Responsibilities included coordinating music theory and composition in a department with 350 music majors, teaching upper level undergraduate and graduate theory and composition.

1998-2002 Assistant Professor (visiting), Idaho State University. Responsibilities included teaching Composition, Music Theory I, II, III, IV, Aural Skills I, II, III, IV, Orchestration, Music History I, American Music, Music Appreciation, German I & II; department web master; advisor to ISU Rodeo Team.

1998 Assistant Head Wrangler, Yellowstone National Park, WY. Duties included overseeing the daily operations at the corrals; attending to the needs of the guests, employees and stock; enforcing safety procedures for the corral facility, guests and employees; training new wranglers and familiarizing them with the corral operations, safety procedures and interpretive commentary. Interpretive commentary included many aspects of Yellowstone National Park, from ecology to history, including resource management, geology, botany, and wildlife. Responsibilities also included attending to the medical and nutritional needs of the stock; evaluating the individual horses, based on temperament and health, and determining whether they could be used for guests or employees.

1997-99 Consultant, Albert E. Brumley & Sons Music Publishing Company. Responsibilities included establishing internet connections on company terminals, designing commercial internet pages to promote company products, advising on computer hardware and software purchase, teaching employees to use both internet related and non-internet related software, and general technical support for Macintosh computers and programs.

1997 Research Assistant, University of Kentucky. Assistant to Prof. Richard Domek, transcriber for the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Project. The purpose of the project is to provide transcribed and notated scores of the recordings of Duke Ellington, Artie Shaw, Dizzy Gillespie, and others for performance and recording by the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra.

1994-95 Music Librarian, Texas A&M University-Commerce. Responsibilities included hiring and overseeing student workers, being a member of the committee for music library acquisitions, overseeing the listening laboratory, and assisting students in locating research materials.

1993-94 Recording Engineer, Louisiana State University. Responsibilities included recording student, faculty and visiting artist recitals, university symphony and wind ensemble concerts, and organ recitals on location in area churches. All concerts were recorded using a mixer board, a DAT recorder and a standard MS microphone. Additional responsibilities included dubbing tapes of concerts for students and faculty, recording audition tapes for students and attending classes in recording technology.

1991-93 Lecturer (Lektor), Technische Hochschule "Carl Schorlemmer" Merseburg-Leuna Merseburg, Germany. Member of the English faculty in the Institute for Foreign Languages at the Technische Hochschule (a Ph.D. granting institution). Responsibilities included teaching twelve semester hours, proofreading faculty journal submissions and dissertation abstracts. Duties also included giving private English instruction to select faculty members. See attached list of courses. (This former East German university was liquidated and converted to Fachhochschule Merseburg by the German government in 1994.)

1992-93 Lecturer (Lektor), Zusatzstudium, Merseburg, Germany. One of five instructors responsible for directing a semester of language immersion for select graduates of the Technische Hochschule and the Fachhochschule Merseburg , the intent being to make graduates more attractive to foreign companies. Program was administered and funded by the German government. See attached list of courses.

1992 Contracted English Instructor, Buna GmbH, Skopau, Germany. Responsibilities included teaching Business English to upper level management in a large international company.

1992 Interpreter, Internationale Händel-Festspiele, Halle, Germany. Translator and interpreter for singers, conductors (Martin Neary, Dennis Darlow), stage crews, and guests during the International Handel Festival.
Private Teaching

1991- Composition. Students range from high school to graduate level.

1988-96 Piano. Beginning to lower level piano instruction given in both the English and German languages.

1988-96 Tutoring. Theory, counterpoint and German.

Awards, Commissions and Scholarships

1997 Commissioned to write a concerto for saxophone and orchestra by Miles Osland.

1996 Recipient of a fully paid merit based scholarship from the Goethe Institute, covering room, board, tuition, and daily expenditures for a one month period in Murnau Germany.

1996 Recipient of a graduate student travel grant to bring in a pianist for the premiere of Nocturne for Piano and Orchestra.

1996 Commissioned by Christopher J. Kosterman to write a jazz influenced piece for bass clarinet and piano.

1990 Passed the Goethe Institute's Mittelstufenprüfung, entitling one to study at a German university.

1988 Recipient of a German Club scholarship, covering tuition for summer study at the University of Graz.

1989 Inducted into the national German honor society, Delta Phi Alpha.

1999 Doe-eyed for saxophone quintet and rhythm section is included on the most recent University of Kentucky Mega-Sax recording (cassette and CD) called Stinking Up the Place. It features Miles Osland on alto saxophone. The score is available from Walrus Music.

1998 Doe-eyed for big band. Written for jazz saxophonist Miles Osland. Currently in the standard repertoire of the Dallas Jazz Orchestra.

1998 Doe-eyed for saxophone quintet and rhythm section was published in the 1998 May/June issue of the Saxophone Journal. The publication is accompanied by a compact disc featuring a performance and performance commentary by jazz saxophonist Miles Osland.

Graduate Theory (MUS 568) A study of the history of the sonata form from its beginnings through the works of Vaughan Williams.

Composition (MUS 372, 464 & 572) Creative activity in the composition of larger forms. Individual faculty supervision.

Form and Analysis (MUS 363) A study of musical structure and design from all historical periods. Introduces diverse methods of musical analysis to gain an ability to distinguish various stylistic idioms.

Orchestration (MUS 362) A study of basic techniques of instrumentation, including ranges, transpositions and characteristics of band and orchestral instruments. Practical application in the form of projects for various instrumental combinations.

Music Theory III (MUS 222) A continuation of the study of melodic and harmonic materials of tonal music expanded to include diatonic and chromatic resources and their application. Formal procedures studied include larger traditional structures such as rondo, sonata and contrapuntal forms.

Music Theory IV (MUS 223) A study of musical materials and structures that evolved during the late 19th and 20th centuries. Emphasis is placed on investigation of the entire panorama of twentieth century music, including folk, ethnic and jazz idioms in addition to the classical music tradition.
